What Is Cloud Storage?

Cloud storage is a service model in which data is stored, managed, and maintained on remote servers operated by a cloud provider and accessed over the internet. Rather than relying on local hard drives, on-premises servers, or physical storage media, organizations and individuals store data in provider-managed infrastructure that is accessible from any device with an internet connection.
Cloud storage eliminates the physical constraints of local storage capacity, the operational overhead of managing storage hardware, and the geographic limitations that prevent access to data outside a specific location.

Types of Cloud Storage

Object Storage

Designed for storing large volumes of unstructured data such as images, videos, backups, log files, and documents. Object storage scales horizontally to petabytes, is cost-effective for large data volumes, and provides high durability through multi-location replication. AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage are leading object storage services.

Block Storage

Provides raw storage volumes that function like physical hard drives, attached to virtual machines for operating system and application data. Block storage offers low latency and is appropriate for databases, virtual machine disks, and applications requiring high-performance, transactional I/O.

File Storage

Presents storage as a shared file system that multiple compute instances can mount simultaneously, using standard file protocols like NFS or SMB. File storage suits workloads that require shared access to a common file structure across multiple servers.

Security and Compliance Considerations in Cloud Storage

Encryption of data at rest and in transit is the baseline security requirement for any cloud storage deployment. Access control policies must enforce least privilege: no user or service should have broader access to stored data than their specific role requires. For organizations subject to data residency regulations, the geographic location of cloud storage must be explicitly configured and verified.
